Sapient programs. They can move in and out of any software still hardwired to the system. That means that anyone we haven't unplugged...is potentially an Assassin. Inside the Matrix, they are both no one and anyone. 
Assassins are programs whose main purpose is to eliminate and silence anyone who could reveal the truth or escape from the Matrix, as well as causing harm to its system.
History[]
Assassins were created by the Machines after the end of the Second Renaissance with the Judgement Day, when the Architect created the first iteration Matrix. Ever since, they roamed the Paraside Matrix and the Nightmare Matrix, monitoring the humans there present and preventing them from ever finding out about the simulation.
