Trivia[]

  • His birthday, December 20, was my due date.
  • In part intended to be a "Dark Multiverse" analog of Knight Owl, Doctor Impossible, and Black Knight.
  • Additionally based on Batman, Prometheus, Ozymandias, Darkseid, Doctor Doom, Doc Dread, and Thanos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • His birth name, Alexander Methuselah Doran, reflects aspects of his nature that were predetermined beyond his agency.
    • Alexander (meaning "defender/protector of man") is derived from the Greek verb ἀλέξειν (aléxein; 'to ward off, avert, defend') and the noun ἀνήρ (anḗr;GEN ἀνδρός, andrós; meaning 'man').
      • This connects him to all William Lawtons of the Masterless Multiverse, as William is a hybrid of the Old Germanic Wilhelm and French Guillaume, and means "Willful Protector/Protection."
    • Methuselah is a Hebrew name roughly meaning "Man of the Weapon" and is the name of a biblical Patriarch.
      • This speaks to the inherent violence in his life.
      • It also refers to the cultural dominance of Christianity in his birth nation, as is the case for both Alexander and the Wills.
    • Doran is derived from the Irish name "Deorain", from "deoradh", an exile, wanderer or stranger.
      • This is metaphorical in his own disconnection to the time, place, and people he lived with.
  • His chosen name, Casimir Achille Doran, reflects aspects of his nature determined by his agency.
    • Casimir is derived from the Slavic elements kaziti "to destroy" combined with miru "peace, world"
      • This refers to his general disruptive nature, and eventually his downfall after finding the Black Diamond of Death and becoming a Darkseid.
    • Achille is the French and Italian form of the Greek name Achilles.
      • The etymology of Achilles is uncertain but for the purposes of this character it's derived ἄχος ('áchos') "distress, pain, sorrow, grief" and λαός ('laós') "people, soldiers, nation", resulting in a proto-form *Akhí-lāu̯os "he who has the people distressed" or "he whose people have distress".
      • The grief or distress of the people is a theme raised numerous times in the Iliad (and frequently by Achilles himself). Achilles' role as the hero of grief or distress forms an ironic juxtaposition with the conventional view of him as the hero of κλέος 'kléos' ("glory", usually in war). Furthermore, laós has been construed by Gregory Nagy, following Leonard Palmer, to mean "a corps of soldiers", a muster. With this derivation, the name obtains a double meaning in the poem: when the hero is functioning rightly, his men bring distress to the enemy, but when wrongly, his men get the grief of war. The poem is in part about the misdirection of anger on the part of leadership.
      • This interpretation highlights a core similarity and dissimilarity in Will and Alexander as opposite sides of a coin. Where Knight Owl eventually reaches harmony with his inner rage and directs it properly, Alexander was consumed by his rage and in defining moments, misdirected it. In the end, Knight Owl achieves excellence both as a hero and as a leader, Alexander fails as a hero and as a leader. This culminates in the fundamental and fatal divergence between the Paragon of Destiny and the Herald/Hostage of Fate. Both men looked into the abyss, but Alexander blinked.
    • Doran carries and additional literal meaning in that his own actions cause him to become a wandering exile in the multiverse after his universe is destroyed.
